If you’re like us you’ll have stuff, a lot of stuff! Whether it’s larger items such as furniture that you don’t have room for or smaller items in boxes that you want to store with us, we can take care of them all for you.
Over time, these things can accumulate, and it may be difficult to keep track of what’s stored at home vs. what’s in self storage. If you regularly add and remove items from your unit, it becomes even more complicated. It’s no good de-cluttering if you don’t know where anything is.
Get Organised with an Inventory List
An inventory list is a good solution since it will help you keep track of what goes in and what comes out of storage. Here we share a few tips on how to create the best self storage inventory list.
Start by Creating a List of Categories
We understand if you have been putting off sorting through your storage, it can be a bit daunting. But if you divide the job into small, manageable tasks, you’ll have a finished inventory sooner than you might think. To help you get started, create some categories for your possessions, based on what they are and which room they came from. Then sort everything into those categories.
Perhaps you’re thinking about using self storage and want to get organised? Making an inventory list before you start storing with us may help you decide what size unit you need.
How to Create Your List
If you’d rather keep things simple, write your inventory on paper. For example, you can put it in a notebook dedicated to the purpose. In the long term, it will be easier to monitor your stored belongings if you use a spreadsheet or inventory app on your computer, tablet, or phone. You can then easily add, remove and edit items as needed and can access those lists from anywhere. Spreadsheet apps to consider are Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers or Google Sheets.
With a home inventory app for your phone or tablet, you can keep track of your belongings and their location. These apps allow you to organise your belongings and create a mobile database with just a few clicks. Encircle, Nest Egg and Sortly, for example, allow users to store photos and videos with their inventory. Other features that come in handy are the ability to search your list and even print labels.
We have created a downloadable Sparkford Self Storage Inventory Sheet as a PDF that will help you get started.
Label Your Boxes and Use Shelving
Label boxes and shelves with details that will allow you to find what you’re looking for more easily. Store items of a similar nature on the same shelf. Using brightly coloured tape for labelling can help you colour code different categories. These categories can then be noted down by shelf, box number and location.
Make sure you label each shelf in a way that makes sense to you. You can even make a plan of the space if it helps you remember where things are. If you have several of an item, don’t forget to note down how many, and if there are any serial numbers or barcodes on the articles include these too.
Keep List is Up-to-Date
It is important your inventory is kept up-to-date to ensure you know what’s where. Make sure to update your inventory every time you add or remove an item from your Sparkford Storage unit. That way, you’ll always know where to find something. Don’t forget to ensure any paper and digital copies of your inventory are up-to-date as well. It’s no good having a current spreadsheet if the printed copy in your hand is out of date.
